Are You Suffering from Nursing Home Abuse or Neglect?

Nursing Home Abuse Cases

When a nursing home fails to provide a safe environment and proper care for residents, it may be subject to a lawsuit(s) seeking compensation for the patient(s) who suffered abuse or neglect. Below are some examples of recent nursing home abuse cases*:

  • In February 2006, a Bexar County, TX jury awarded $160 million—the third largest nursing home verdict in U.S. history—to the daughter of a nursing home patient who suffered a severe concussion when he was beaten "beyond recognition" by another patient.
  • In a June 2007 verdict in a wrongful death suit against a New Mexico nursing home, an Albuquerque jury awarded $54 million to a woman whose mother died as the result of neglect by nursing home staff.
  • A Pennsylvania jury awarded just under $600,000 to a woman who suffered a fractured tibia, repeated falls, bedsores, infections and physical abuse while a patient in a Philadelphia nursing home.
  • A 2004 whistleblower lawsuit brought against a Chicago nursing home resulted in an award of more than $1.6 million. In the suit, two former employees alleged that nursing home management billed the State of Illinois and the federal government for "inadequate or worthless services and for inappropriate care that harmed patients."
