Riems may have abused 23 more at nursing home
PERKINS TOWNSHIP -- A nurse accused of rape for sexually touching a partially paralyzed 55-year-old man might have sexually abused at least 23 more people in the nursing home where he worked, according to Perkins police.
The investigation of registered nurse John R. Riems unfolded yesterday as Perkins police Chief Tim McClung and Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter held a press conference with Lloyd S. Early, special agent in charge of Ohio Attorney General's health care fraud section. Learn more

Government outs chronically underperforming nursing homes
WASHINGTON (AP) - Fifty-four nursing homes are being told by the government that they're among the worst in their states in an effort to goad them into improving patient care.
Lawmakers and advocacy groups have been pushing the Bush administration to make it easier for consumers to identify poorly performing nursing homes. They complain that too many facilities get cited for serious deficiencies but don't make adequate improvement, or do so only temporarily. Learn more
Washington Scrutinizes Nursing Homes
WASHINGTON, Nov. 15 - Lawmakers in two hearings on Thursday proposed ways to force nursing homes to provide more details about ownership and to hold those owners more accountable when problems emerge.
The hearings were prompted in part by concerns that quality at nursing homes was declining as large chains were acquired by private investment groups. Learn more
